The Bladed Beowulf: A Cost-Effective Alternative to Traditional Beowulfs
نویسنده
چکیده
We present a new twist to the Beowulf cluster — the Bladed Beowulf. In contrast to traditional Beowulfs which typically use Intel or AMD processors, our Bladed Beowulf uses Transmeta processors in order to keep thermal power dissipation low and reliability and density high while still achieving comparable performance to Inteland AMD-based clusters. Given the ever increasing complexity of traditional supercomputers and Beowulf clusters; the issues of size, reliability, power consumption, and ease of administration and use will be “the” issues of this decade for high-performance computing. Bigger and faster machines are simply not good enough anymore. To illustrate, we present the results of performance benchmarks on our Bladed Beowulf and introduce two performance metrics that contribute to the total cost of ownership (TCO) of a computing system — performance/power and performance/space.

In this paper, we present a novel twist on the Beowulf cluster — the Bladed Beowulf. Designed by RLX Technologies and integrated and configured at Los Alamos National Laboratory, our Bladed Beowulf consists of compute nodes made from commodity off-the-shelf parts mounted on motherboard blades measuring 14.7 00 4.7 0.58. Each motherboard blade (node) contains a 633-MHz Transmeta TM5600TMCPU, 256...
متن کاملBeowulfs Go to Sea
As the size of crews continues to be reduced on modern warships, and at the same time the complexity of the tasks that warships have to handle continues to increase, the amount of computing power aboard a warship will have to increase dramatically. One of the most cost-effective ways of creating supercomputers is to cluster inexpensive off-theshelf commodity computers so that they act as a sing...

Brems is the Idaho State University Physics Department's Beowulf REsource for Monte Carlo Simulations. Beowulfs present unique engineering challenges because of the many choices in vendors, architectures, and hardware afforded by tapping into commodity server and specialty high performance computing markets. Brems is no exception to this and represents a unique balance of code performance, hard...
متن کاملACL 2 for Parallel Systems Software : A Progress Report
A significant development in high-performance computing has occurred in recent years with the proliferation of “Beowulf” clusters [6]. Beowulf clusters are parallel computers assembled from commodity-priced personal computers and networks. The explosive growth of the personal computer marketplace, together with rapid technological advances in the hardware sold there, has driven the price/perfor...
